Matcha vs Green Tea vs Detox Tea: Which Fits Your Morning?

Matcha vs green tea comes down to one thing: with matcha you drink the whole ground leaf, so you get more caffeine and a longer, calmer focus; with green tea you drink an infusion, lighter and gentler for all day. Detox tea is a third kind of cup: a herbal blend built for the feeling of a lighter, less bloated day. Pick by what you want from your morning, and the routine finally sticks.

Prefer to listen? Our three hosts taste all three cups, argue about whisks and settle which one belongs in your morning:

Key takeaways

  • Matcha and green tea come from the same plant. Matcha is shade-grown and ground into powder, so you swallow the leaf instead of steeping it.
  • Matcha carries more caffeine per gram than leaf green tea, and its L-theanine is why people describe the lift as calm rather than jittery.
  • Matcha is not automatically the antioxidant winner: in a 2023 lab study, ordinary bagged green teas scored higher on total phenolics than matcha.
  • "Detox tea" is a blend, not a plant. Read the list: green tea or guarana means caffeine, senna means a laxative cup for short use only.
  • The best morning cup is the one that matches your goal: focus, a gentle all-day habit, or feeling lighter.

Matcha vs green tea vs detox tea at a glance

Here are the three cups side by side, so you can see in ten seconds which one fits your morning.

Matcha Green tea Detox tea
What it is Shade-grown green tea leaves ground to a fine powder Dried green tea leaves steeped in hot water A herbal blend: often green tea or mate plus herbs like ginger, dandelion or senna
What you drink The whole leaf, whisked into water or milk An infusion, leaves stay in the bag An infusion of the blend
Caffeine Highest of the three Moderate Depends on the blend: none to moderate
Taste Grassy, creamy, a little sweet Light, fresh, can turn bitter if over-steeped Herbal, spicy or fruity by blend
Prep 2 minutes, needs a whisk or a shaker 3 minutes, just a bag 3-5 minutes, just a bag
Best for Long focus, a coffee swap A gentle habit you can repeat all day Feeling lighter and less bloated as part of a routine

Matcha vs green tea: same plant, different cup

Both come from Camellia sinensis. The difference is how the leaf is grown and how much of it ends up in you.

Matcha plants are shaded for weeks before harvest, which pushes up compounds like L-theanine, and then the leaves are stone-ground. When you whisk matcha you drink all of it. With green tea, hot water pulls out part of what is in the leaf and the rest goes in the bin with the bag.

That is why the caffeine gap is real. A 2020 review of matcha's chemistry puts matcha at 18.9-44.4 mg of caffeine per gram, against 11.3-24.67 mg per gram for green tea leaves. In a cup, the BBC's dietitian sources estimate 35-70 mg of caffeine in a teaspoon (1-2 g) of matcha, while a brewed cup of green tea is about 29 mg according to the nutrient comparison on Verywell Health. A heaped spoon of matcha can match a flat white.

The magic is the pairing. As the BBC piece explains, the caffeine and L-theanine in matcha seem to balance each other out: you still get the lift, plus a calmer edge, which is why so many matcha drinkers say they stay focused for longer.

Is matcha healthier than green tea?

Not by default. Matcha wins on caffeine and focus; plain green tea holds its own on antioxidants and has far more research behind it.

A 2023 study of fifteen store-bought green teas found that bagged and gunpowder green teas had higher total phenolic content and stronger antioxidant scores than the matchas tested, and that cheaper culinary matcha beat pricey ceremonial matcha on those scores. Ceremonial matcha did have the most caffeine. And a British Dietetic Association spokesperson told the BBC there is a much larger body of evidence behind regular green tea than behind matcha.

So skip the "superfood" hype. Choose matcha because you love the ritual and the steady focus, and choose green tea because it is cheap, easy and a cup you can drink three times a day without thinking.

What is actually in a detox tea

A detox tea is a blend, so its effect depends entirely on what is in the bag. Spend thirty seconds on the ingredient list and you know exactly what you are drinking.

  • Green tea, matcha, mate or guarana: the caffeine part. Your detox cup is also an energy cup, so count it with your coffee.
  • Dandelion, birch or cleavers: the "water" herbs. The European Medicines Agency's dandelion leaf monograph covers its traditional use to increase the amount of urine, which is where the lighter, less puffy feeling comes from.
  • Ginger, rosemary, fennel: the warm, belly-friendly herbs that make the cup feel good after a heavy evening.
  • Senna (sinameki): a laxative herb. The EMA concludes that senna leaf can be used short term for occasional constipation, by adults and over-12s, for no longer than a week as a medicine. A senna blend is a reset cup for a few days, not your every-morning tea.

The honest win of a detox tea is the routine: a warm cup at the same time every day, plenty of water around it, and herbs chosen for how you want to feel. That habit is what makes mornings lighter.

Which one fits your morning?

Match the cup to the goal and you will not need willpower to keep drinking it.

  1. You want sharp focus for a long workday: matcha. Half to one teaspoon, whisked, as your coffee swap.
  2. You want a gentle habit you can repeat: green tea. One bag in the morning, another after lunch.
  3. You feel heavy and bloated and want a routine: a detox blend before breakfast, with two litres of water through the day.
  4. You are sensitive to caffeine: a blend with no green tea, mate or guarana on the list.
  5. You already drink two coffees: swap one for matcha instead of adding a third caffeinated cup.

How to make each cup in under five minutes

Good technique turns all three from "fine" into a cup you look forward to.

  • Matcha: sift half to one teaspoon into a bowl, add a splash of hot (not boiling) water around 75-80°C, whisk in a quick zigzag until foamy, then top up with water or warm milk. No whisk? Shake it in a closed jar.
  • Green tea: water just off the boil, cooled for a minute, and steep for 2-3 minutes. Longer turns it bitter, and bitterness is why most people quit green tea.
  • Detox tea: follow the pack. One bag, freshly boiled water, a lid on the cup, 3-5 minutes. Our guidance for tea formats is up to 2 cups a day, before breakfast and dinner.

Caffeine: how much is too much

For healthy adults, the European Food Safety Authority considers up to 400 mg of caffeine a day from all sources safe, and up to 200 mg a day during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The trap is stacking. A big matcha latte, two coffees and a green-tea detox blend can add up fast. Count every cup that lists green tea, matcha, mate or guarana, and keep caffeine to the first half of the day so it does not steal your sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Does matcha have more caffeine than green tea?

Yes. Because you drink the whole ground leaf, matcha delivers more caffeine than steeped green tea. Reviews put matcha at about 19-44 mg of caffeine per gram, and a teaspoon of matcha at roughly 35-70 mg, while a brewed cup of green tea is around 29 mg. How much you get depends on how much powder you use.

Is matcha or green tea better for weight loss?

Neither one melts weight on its own. What helps is the swap: a matcha or green tea instead of a sugary latte or a soft drink saves you those calories every single day, and the caffeine can make an early walk feel easier. Pick the one you will actually drink daily, keep it unsweetened, and pair it with water and regular meals.

Can I drink matcha and detox tea on the same day?

Yes, if you watch the caffeine. Many detox blends contain green tea, matcha, mate or guarana, so a matcha in the morning plus a caffeinated detox cup counts as two caffeine drinks. Keep the total under the EFSA guide of 400 mg a day, and do not stack several detox products at once: one product type at a time.

Should I drink detox tea every day?

It depends on the blend. A senna-free blend can be a daily cup: follow the label, which for our teas means up to 2 cups a day, for up to two months, then a one-month break. A blend with senna is a short reset, since EU regulators advise senna for no longer than a week. Always check the ingredient list first.

What is the best time to drink matcha?

Mid-morning, after breakfast, is the sweet spot for most people. You get the calm focus for the hours that matter, it does not hit an empty stomach, and the caffeine has worn off well before bedtime. If matcha replaces your coffee, drink it when you would have had the coffee, and stop caffeine by early afternoon.

Florence: Good morning and welcome back to the Meri Natural kitchen table. Today, three cups. Matcha, green tea and detox tea. Which one belongs in your morning?

Oliver: And I brought a whisk! A real bamboo one. I have no idea how to use it.

Kaan: I can see that. You are holding it like a toothbrush.

Oliver: It's a very expensive toothbrush.

Florence: Okay, Kaan. Start simple. Matcha and green tea. Same plant?

Kaan: Same plant, yes. Camellia sinensis. But matcha is shaded before harvest and then ground into powder. So with matcha, you drink the WHOLE leaf.

Oliver: And with green tea I drink... tea-flavoured water?

Kaan: An infusion. Part of the leaf goes into the water. The rest goes in the bin with the bag.

Florence: Which is why matcha has more caffeine, right?

Kaan: Right. A review of matcha puts it at about nineteen to forty-four milligrams per gram. Leaf green tea, about eleven to twenty-five.

Oliver: Okay, but in a cup. Real life.

Florence: Dietitians quoted by the BBC say a teaspoon of matcha has roughly thirty-five to seventy milligrams. A brewed cup of green tea, around twenty-nine.

Oliver: Wait, so a big spoon of matcha is basically... a flat white?

Kaan: A heaped spoon, yes. Your third coffee is hiding in a green drink.

Oliver: I had two coffees before we started recording.

Florence: We'll come back to that. But people say matcha feels different. Calmer. Is that real?

Kaan: Mm. Matcha has more L-theanine. Researchers think it balances the caffeine. You still get the lift, but smoother. That's why people say they focus longer.

Florence: So matcha is the healthier one. Done.

Kaan: Not so fast-

Oliver: -oh, here comes the twist.

Kaan: A 2023 study tested fifteen green teas from the shop. The ordinary bagged teas scored HIGHER on antioxidants than the matchas.

Oliver: The cheap tea bags won?

Kaan: On that test, yes. And green tea simply has far more research behind it. Matcha is wonderful. It is not magic.

Florence: I love that. So, matcha for the ritual and the focus. Green tea for an easy habit you repeat all day.

Florence: Now the third cup. Detox tea. Kaan, what is actually in the bag?

Kaan: A detox tea is a blend, not a plant. So you read the list. Green tea, mate or guarana? Then it's also a caffeine cup.

Oliver: Mm-hm. And the herbs?

Kaan: Dandelion, birch, these are the water herbs. Europe's medicines agency lists dandelion leaf for its traditional use to increase urine. That's the lighter, less puffy feeling.

Kaan: Ginger and rosemary, the warm belly herbs. And senna. Sinameki.

Oliver: Sinameki sounds like a dance.

Kaan: It is a dance. To the bathroom. Senna is a laxative herb. The European agency says use it short term, no longer than a week.

Florence: Okay! So a senna blend is a reset for a few days, not your every-morning tea.

Kaan: Exactly. For every day, choose a blend without senna.

Florence: So let's pick. Listener wants sharp focus for a long workday?

Kaan: Matcha. Half to one teaspoon, hot water, not boiling. Whisk it.

Oliver: Like a toothbrush.

Kaan: Zigzag, Oliver. Zigzag. No whisk? Shake it in a jar.

Florence: Someone who wants a gentle habit?

Kaan: Green tea. Two, three minutes, no longer. Bitter tea is why people quit.

Florence: And feeling heavy, bloated, wanting a routine that sticks?

Kaan: A detox blend before breakfast. Same time every day. And two litres of water around it.

Oliver: Um... and someone who already drinks two coffees. Asking for a friend.

Florence: Swap one coffee for matcha. Don't ADD a third cup. The EU food safety authority says up to four hundred milligrams of caffeine a day is fine for healthy adults. Two hundred in pregnancy.

Kaan: And count every cup with green tea, mate or guarana. Caffeine before lunch, so it doesn't steal your sleep.

Oliver: Fine. Tomorrow, one coffee, one matcha. With my toothbrush.

Florence: In the shop: Matcha Premium Japanese Detox Tea if you want matcha with a short reset, it has senna, so follow the label. Meri Detox Tea Premium for a daily cup with dandelion, ginger and green tea. And Meri Detox Tea for a calmer cup with no green tea on the list.

Kaan: One product at a time. Pick one, give it a fixed place in your morning.

Florence: The full guide, with the comparison table, is on the blog. Thanks, Kaan. Thanks, Oliver.

Oliver: I'm going to practise my zigzag.
